The Army Big Band, a 25-piece band made up of the best jazz and big band musicians and singers from the British Army Corps of Music, will be opening Jazz in the City 2009. This exciting big band plays in a modern style while also drawing on older big band legends such as Count Basie and Buddy Rich.

The legendary Bobby Wellins makes a welcome return to this year’s festival. The tenor saxophonist, best known for his collaboration with Stan Tracey on the seminal 1965 British jazz album Under Milk Wood, has just won the LIFETIME RECOGNITION AWARD at The SCOTTISH JAZZ AWARDS 2009.

This iconic documentary film is set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, and filmed and directed by noted commercial and fashion photographer Bert Stern.
The film mixes images of water and the city with the performers and audience at the festival. It also features scenes of the 1958 America's Cup yacht races and is largely without dialog or narration.

Familiar faces in south coast venues, David and Chris have teamed up to repeat their success at last year's ‘JITC’ weekend. A former cabaret and theatre performer, David has reverted back to his musical roots for, as he puts it, 'a quieter life'. Chris has been first choice for local jazz groups and big bands for a number of years.

This 60 minute film biography of the great jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman is affectionately narrated by the late George Melly who charts Goodman's rise from the Jewish ghetto of Chicago to become one of the world's most popular music stars of the '30s, '40s and '50s.

Real-life jazz legend Dexter Gordon brilliantly portrays the fictional tenor sax player Dale Turner, (a conflation of Lester Young and Bud Powell) a musician slowly losing the battle with alcoholism, estranged from his family, and hanging on by a thread in the 1950's New York jazz world.

A fine guitarist, Dave worked for ten years in Canada and USA. Returning in 1984 Dave continued to build his reputation in the South Coast jazz and blues scene.
Ann, born in North London joined her first semi-pro jazz band aged just 15. Her achievements include gold and platinum discs for her arrangements on "Classic Rock" performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
